Day 13 Goodwick Sands to Newport Parrog

So, here we are at the harbour front in Goodwick (pronounced Goodick), ready to set out for day 13, the second last day of our hike.  The weather doesn't look too promising with low cloud and mist along the cliffs and the threat of showers today . . . but we are prepared and our spirits are high!
In fact, during the first hour we encountered light rain and had to switch to rain gear, which we then had off and on a few times during the day.


On the way out of town and through Fishgard, the neighboring town, we saw a tiled mural depicting the original Moby Dick Film from the 1950's . . . .  which was filmed right here in Fishgard.


As we gained elevation we could see the old harbour of Fishgard which we would then hike down to, then back up again to the cliffs.


Heading out of Fishgard, we passed the old Fort, with its 4 cannons protecting the harbour so we had to have a ceremonial mock cannon firing before we moved on.

Eventually, we had to hike up and around the headland, Dinas Island, which isn't really an island, but more of a small peninsula.  This took us up to a fairly high elevation and we were packing our rain gear back on to manage the wind and light rain.

Statistics for the Day: 25,000 steps 9 1/2 miles Ascent of 610 meters 1 1/2 ciders After another hearty breakfast, we all piled into a taxi for a quick ride back to the start point for today at Pwll Deri for our walk back to Goodwick Sands and another night at The Ferry Boat Hotel.  The day looked a bit grey but the forecast was for improvement as time went on. Day 8 Broad Haven to Solva

Today's Stats: 38,000 steps 12 miles ascent 720 meters ...and again 2 ciders and one gin! A bit of bleak looking weather as we set off today after saying goodbye to Ellen and Ian, our fantastic hosts at Anchor Guest House in Broad Haven.  Our host promised that the day would improve...they were right! So . . what do you think girls, rain gear or no rain gear, rain gear or no rain gear . . .  As we climbed up to rejoin the coastal path it was evident that the coastline was becoming a bit more wild and rugged.  This area was an important coal mining region during the 18th century.  Most of the coastline now is showing signs of a great deal of land slippage along the path. The first of several beaches that we encountered  today was Druidston Haven...a secluded inlet of perfect sand.  Just past this beach the earth changed from rocky sandstone to coal....pitch black.  Some of the path we were walking along was also shiny b...

Surprise! it has been an entire year since we have been here on blogger to talk about hiking and it has, been quite a year.  We are now somewhat settled in Tucson, Arizona having said good-bye to Germany in August; but anxiously looking forward to getting back to Europe to hike, and soak in the culture surrounding this endeavour that we so fondly look back on. Two years ago we hiked Offa's Dyke Path in Wales and loved the venue so much that we are taking a crack at the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path framing much of the western coast of Wales. As you can see from the photo above, almost the entire way hugs the coastline of Wales which is said to promise panoramic views along the entire route.  At 180 miles (290km's), we have planned for 12 days of walking along the rugged but not technically challenging path from Amroth in the south east to St. Dogmaels in the north west.  With it's coastal position, we are expecting maritime climates (read...a lot of rain) and a ...
