Day 11 Aberdraw to Pwll Deri

Image
Today's Stats: 10 miles Ascent 460 meters 27,000 steps So after a nice night in the local Trefin pub, the Ship Inn (the only restaurant/pub in the little village....surprisingly the food was superb!) we awoke in our characterful B&B to a wonderful home cooked breakfast.  The eggs were from their own hens out back and were the best eggs (and best prepared) we experienced so far this trip . . . and we have had some good breakfasts. We set out from Trefin to the coast to hook up with the coastal path again.  On the way out of town, we stopped at a local cafe for flapjacks, scones and assorted other goodies to go. Soon after leaving we rounded the headland towards the first inlet at Aber Castle, climbing up and down through the now familiar inlets and cliffs. Our exit picture with goodies!  We say good-bye to Trefin A look back along the coast we have walked The heather and wildflowers, always present along the path This is another exam...

Day 10 Whitesands to Aberdraw

Statistic for Today: 11 1/4 miles 31,000 steps ascent: 700 meters(2295 feet) 1 1/2 ciders The rain is gone and the sunshine is back . . . yehhhh!  We set out today from Whitesands Bay back along the coast and on to St. David's Head which looks out to the Irish Sea.  Rumour has it that one can see the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland on a clear day from the highest point on St. David's Head. We continued on through a mostly wild and remote stretch of the path today.  Along the way we saw Neolithic burial chambers, seals jumping in the water, local boys diving off the ruins of old quarry walls into the water and the relics of a thriving slate mining industry.  Fascinating day! Happy hikers setting off in the sunshine! Neolithic Burial Chamber Shelagh, trying it on for size (you're supposed to go under it Shelagh!  Always the Princess!) Pete contemplates a morning swim . . . ? The path comes very close to the edge alon...

Day 9 Solva to Whitesands

Today's Stats: 34,000 steps 12.2 miles 660 meters 1 cider, 1 Dark & Stormy (appropriate eh!) As forecasted, a lovely rain to start the morning, our first of the trip.  So, we strapped on our rain gear, flipped on the pack covers and set off from the Harbour in Solva.  Today we also had the luxury of leaving our suitcases in our rooms as we would be back to the same hotel this evening. Pete (camera shy), Shelagh and Cathy loving the rain Solva Harbour as we were leaving Solva Harbour 15 minutes later Above and below, we came across some special needs kids learning survival skills in a quiet, picturesque cove. More great views despite the light rain The islands above are named the 3 Bitches.  We think we like them. The picture above captures the speed and magnitude of the water as the tide is going out and the breakers switch directions and collide with one another.  Very cool ...

Day 8 Broad Haven to Solva

Image
Today's Stats: 38,000 steps 12 miles ascent 720 meters ...and again 2 ciders and one gin! A bit of bleak looking weather as we set off today after saying goodbye to Ellen and Ian, our fantastic hosts at Anchor Guest House in Broad Haven.  Our host promised that the day would improve...they were right! So . . what do you think girls, rain gear or no rain gear, rain gear or no rain gear . . .  As we climbed up to rejoin the coastal path it was evident that the coastline was becoming a bit more wild and rugged.  This area was an important coal mining region during the 18th century.  Most of the coastline now is showing signs of a great deal of land slippage along the path. The first of several beaches that we encountered  today was Druidston Haven...a secluded inlet of perfect sand.  Just past this beach the earth changed from rocky sandstone to coal....pitch black.  Some of the path we were walking along was also shiny b...
