Day 9 Solva to Whitesands
Today's Stats:
34,000 steps
12.2 miles
660 meters
1 cider, 1 Dark & Stormy (appropriate eh!)
As forecasted, a lovely rain to start the morning, our first of the trip. So, we strapped on our rain gear, flipped on the pack covers and set off from the Harbour in Solva. Today we also had the luxury of leaving our suitcases in our rooms as we would be back to the same hotel this evening.
Pete (camera shy), Shelagh and Cathy loving the rain
Solva Harbour as we were leaving
Solva Harbour 15 minutes later
Above and below, we came across some special needs kids learning survival skills in a quiet, picturesque cove.
More great views despite the light rain
The islands above are named the 3 Bitches. We think we like them.
The picture above captures the speed and magnitude of the water as the tide is going out and the breakers switch directions and collide with one another. Very cool to see.
Ahhhh! Its Shelagh!!
Last inlet before White Sands Bay
More spectacular coastal scenery where parts of the cliffs have fallen into the sea over hundreds of years.
A detour stop to the city of St. David's, just off of today's path. St. David's is the religious capital of Wales and is also the smallest city in Britain, both in size and population. It retains the title city since it has a cathedral which we of course visited. See above and following pictures below.
The picture above is today's cathedral, below is the old ruins of the original cathedral. While we are used to seeing cathedrals at the top of cities, this one was in the valley at the foot of the city. It was also, a short distance from the sea to provide some protection against seaborne raiders.
Below some photos of the inside of the cathedral
And finally, White Sands Beach, our final stop today. As we were staying back in Solva tonight, we were whisked away in a dark black Mercedes to the Cambrian Inn to recover.
